Are you trying to decide if blogging is right for you?

Blogging is a pretty popular way to make money on the internet. Tons of people start blogs every single day in hopes of making a side income or even replacing their full time income. Even though there’s really good money to be made in blogging, it may not be right for you.

BUT it also may just be the best thing that ever happens to you! Starting a blog completely changed my life and I’m SO glad I took the leap and did it.

If you’ve been thinking about getting started with blogging, here are 9 telltale signs you should start a blog in 2022.

9 Signs You Should Start A Blog Today

1. You’ve Thought About Starting A Blog

If you’ve had even a tiny feeling that you should start a blog, GO FOR IT!! This is your sign. Seriously, you don’t even need to read the rest of the reasons on this list.

If the idea of starting a blog has been on your mind for awhile, it’s time to take action. Check out my post on How To Start A Blog if you’re not sure where to start.

I spent way too long contemplating whether or not I should start a blog. Honestly, I really wish I would have just gone for it right away! I would likely be much further along in my blogging journey and much more successful if I had just started right away.

2. People Tell You To Start A Blog

If people in your life have been telling you to start a blog, it’s about time you listen to them. Oftentimes, other people can see qualities in us that we’re not able to see in ourselves.

If people are constantly asking you to share your travel itineraries, write your recipes down for them, or give them recommendations on how to decorate your house, that’s a sign you need to start a blog. If you’re the go-to person on a certain topic, that makes you an excellent candidate for being a successful blogger.

This is also a great way to decide on your blogging niche. Figure out what topic people often come to you about and start a blog about that!

3. You Want To Help Or Inspire Others

One of the most rewarding things about blogging is that you get to help and inspire people. Everyone who comes to your blog is there because they have a question or a problem they need help with.

For example, people come to my blog when they need help planning their trip or learning about starting a blog. I get to help people cross incredible places off their bucket list and start their dream job as a blogger. How cool is that?

If you’re a blogger who writes about fixing cars, you’re helping your readers solve problems with their own car. If you’re a recipe blogger, you’re helping your readers find recipes they love. Every single thing you write should be to serve your audience in one way or another!

If you want to help or inspire others, that’s one of the best signs you should start a blog.

4. You Enjoy Writing

No matter what you want to blog about, you’re going to have to do a lot of writing. Every single blog post I write is at least 1500 words. If that sounds like a nightmare to you, you’ll probably want to look for something else to do!

The good news is that you don’t have to be a good writer to be a successful blogger. There are a ton of bloggers who write super casually and don’t worry too much about punctuation or spelling errors. Blogging is more like having a conversation with your reader. It’s not like you have to write formal research papers every single day!

5. You Enjoy Learning New Things

There are a LOT of different things that go into blogging – writing, keyword research, social media, email marketing, and possibly even photography. I knew absolutely nothing about blogging before I started. The reason I was able to succeed at blogging is that I was willing to learn new skills.

People who enjoy learning and solving problems will have a much easier time becoming a blogger than someone who gets frustrated and gives up easily. One of the best signs you should start a blog is if you enjoy learning new things.

6. You Want Semi-Passive Income

One of my favorite things about blogging is that the income is semi-passive. I can write a blog post once and keep making money off of it for years.

For example, I wrote a post on my other blog in August 2020. That blog continues to make me money every single month. In December of 2021, I made over $500 in ad revenue off of that post (not even including the affiliate income it generated).

That’s not to say blogging isn’t hard work. You have to put in a LOT of work up front to get to the point where your posts are generating that kind of income. But once you’ve done the work, you can make money in your sleep off of posts that you wrote years ago. Pretty cool, right?

7. You Want Freedom

One of the things I love most about blogging is that it gives me so much freedom. I am 100% my own boss so I can decide the hours I work, where I want to work from, what I want to write about, and how I want to scale my business.

Before I started blogging, I was working full time as a freelance social media manager. Although I have a lot of flexibility in when I want to work, I still have to answer to my clients and stick to their deadlines. Blogging gives me the full flexibility that I crave. It also allows me to travel more because I don’t have to be online during my clients’ work hours.

8. You’re Self Motivated

No one tells you what to do or when to work on your blog. You have to motivate yourself to write that post today, create those Pinterest graphics, or send out an email to your email list.

If you’re the type of person who can motivate yourself to work, blogging may be for you!

That’s not to say that there’s not any external motivation. My main source of motivation at the very beginning was seeing income reports from other bloggers. When I was feeling discouraged in the first few months of blogging, I would look up income reports from other bloggers to see what was possible (you can check out my income reports here).

You can also join Facebook groups for bloggers or other communities to help you stay motivated. I’ve even heard of people creating virtual co-working sessions so they can keep each other accountable with their blog.

9. You Don’t Give Up Easily

Did you know that only 10% of bloggers actually make money? That’s not because blogging isn’t lucrative, it’s because 90% of bloggers give up after less than 6 months!

Blogging is a LONG game, and it can be hard to stick with it when you’re not making money. The experts typically say that you should start seeing results within 6 months to a year. That means that most bloggers are giving up right before they would have made money!

I almost gave up on my blog this past summer. It was only making a few dollars a month and it just didn’t feel worth it to stick with it. I decided to hang in there a little bit longer and guess what? I started hitting $1-2k months just a few months later.

The bloggers who make serious money are the ones who are consistent and stick with it even when it’s hard. And I promise you, it DOES pay off eventually. As long as you have a keyword research and Pinterest strategy in place, you will see results.
